TJ Martin
Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin are an Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning directing partnership. They are executive producers on the upcoming National Geographic limited series JFK: ONE DAY IN AMERICA, which is a comprehensive account of the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy and the ripples that followed. Previously, they were executive producers on the Emmy Award-winning first installment of the series, “9/11: One Day in America.”
“Undefeated,” their debut feature-length film about a struggling football program in North Memphis, Tennessee, debuted at the 2011 SXSW film festival and won the Oscar® for Best Documentary Feature at the 2012 Academy Awards. Lindsay and Martin also served as the film’s editors and cinematographers.
Their second film, “LA 92,” revisited the 1992 civil unrest that erupted in Los Angeles following the not-guilty verdicts of the four police officers charged with beating Rodney King. The film, created using only existing archival sources, premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and went on to win the 2017 Primetime Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, as well as being shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature at the 2018 Academy Awards.
Their most recent film, “Tina,” which explores the life and career of Tina Turner, premiered at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival ahead of its North American release on HBO. The film received three Primetime Emmy nominations, including Best Documentary and Best Director.
Other projects include directing an episode of the acclaimed Netflix series “Dogs” and a 2014 special for Nat Geo entitled “I am Dying,” following a young woman’s final months of life. The special was executive-produced by Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix. Their short documentary “My Favorite Picture of You” premiered at the 2013 True/False Film Festival and was nominated for a Webby. In 2020, they served as executive producers on the HBO documentary “Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn.”
They have directed several award-winning commercial campaigns for brands like Facebook, Prudential, Comcast, Toyota and Google. In 2019, they directed “The Truth Is Worth It” campaign for The New York Times. The spots went on to be awarded nearly every honor in commercial advertising, becoming the first commercial in history to win both the Film Grand Prix and Film Craft Grand Prix at the Cannes International Festival of Creativity.
Martin is originally from Seattle, Washington, and Lindsay originates from Rockford, Illinois. They both currently reside in Los Angeles, California.
