Ed Dwight has spent a lifetime quietly building a truly exceptional yet unexpected legacy. Rising from a humble childhood in Kansas City, Kansas, he became the USAF’s first Black jet test pilot then on to become a pioneer in the NASA space program as America’s first Black astronaut candidate. While political pressure ended his opportunity to reach for the stars, that wasn’t the end of his amazing story.
After persevering many surprising ups and downs over 60 years, today, Ed is a renown and revered sculptor and African American historian. With thousands of gallery works and over 130 memorials across the U.S., Ed is an unsung hero that is so multi-dimensional and eclectic, his inspirational life journey was eloquently captured in his “Soaring on the Wings of a Dream” autobiography.
His incredible story has already resonated with millions. As a man who was integral part of African American history then endeavored to document the Black experience through his highly acclaimed creativity, his contribution to American society is revealed in the powerful, in-depth documentary, The Space Race.
