Alewya
Alewya, 29, and her family moved to West London when she was 5. Her Ethiopian Egyptian ancestry can be heard in her music. With her writing partner Dean Barratt, she’s created the title track for QUEENS — inspired by her love of the natural world and Angela Bassett, whom she greatly admires.
Alewya was one of The NME 100: Essential Emerging Artists for 2021, and following on from her debut EP “Panther in Mode,” touring with Little Simz and collaborations with the likes of Moses Boyd and Shy FX, Alewya has gone on to perform her debut sold-out live show.
Inspired by fearless artists and drawing from her mother’s Ethiopian heritage, Alewya — whose name translates to “the highest” in Arabic — is becoming a commanding performer.
“I’m freeing myself up, getting more confident in how lost I feel,” Alewya says. “The next phase is more wild. I have nothing to hold back anymore.”
Showrunner Chloe Sarosh says, “We had used Alewya’s track ‘Jagna’ in our opening episode for QUEENS and her sound, her lyrics and her story represented the themes of the series so perfectly that we approached her to write the theme. Watching her work in the studio was mesmerizing!”
Alewya’s music speaks to the female energy, so QUEENS stood out to her straight away. “I often write to natural history TV on mute, so to be part of this series was exciting …. and to hear my music and Angela Bassett’s voice together — it was crazy!”
