Michelle Carter
Michelle Carter (Elle Fanning) was convicted in 2017 of involuntary manslaughter for encouraging the suicide of her then-boyfriend, Conrad “CoCo” Roy III, via texts and phone calls.
Lynn Roy
Lynn Roy (Chloë Sevigny) is Coco’s mother. She has a dry sense of humor, is intelligent and street smart. She grapples with guilt over her son’s death at first, but as the investigation progresses, Michelle becomes the target of her ire. Eventually, she arrives at the conclusion that blame may be a more complicated concept than she previously thought.
Conrad “Coco” Roy III
Conrad “Coco” Roy III (Colton Ryan) is a sweet, caring young man grappling with anxiety and loneliness in a world he doesn’t feel he fits into. When he first meets Michelle Carter, he sees in her someone who understands his struggles and seems to see the real him. But his relationship with Michelle takes a dark turn as he sets his sights on ending his life.
Conrad “Co” Roy II
Conrad “Co” Roy II (Norbert Leo Butz) is Coco’s father. Toughened by life and work at the docks and on the boats in Mattapoisett, MA, Co is forced to face his own mistakes as a father and sets out to come to terms with the death of his son.
Gail Carter
Gail Carter (Cara Buono) is Michelle’s mother. Gail tries to help Michelle address her mental health issues. She is terrified of the potential reality of her daughter’s complicity in Coco’s death and of how the world will critique her.
David Carter
David Carter (Kai Lennox) is Michelle’s father. David works as a Sales Manager to assist in providing his family with what appears to be a normal, suburban lifestyle. “Appears to be” is the operative phrase, and cracks begin to fissure the illusion.
