Award-winning playwright, producer and actor Zakiyyah Alexander is an executive producer and co-showrunner on the fifth season of Freeform’s hit comedy “grown-ish,” produced by ABC Signature.
Alexander is a native New Yorker raised in Queens and Brooklyn. As a writer and actor, her plays include “The Good Muslim”(Ensemble Studio Theater), the musical “You Are Here,” “Girl Shakes Loose” (Penumbra Theater, O’Neill Musical Conference), “10 Things To Do Before I Die” (Second Stage), “The Etymology of Bird” (Central Park Summer Stage, Hip Hop Theater Festival, Providence Black Repertory Theatre), “Blurring Shine” (Market Theater, Johannesburg), “Sweet Maladies” (Brava Arts Center, Rucker Theatre, Bay Area Playwrights Festival), and “How to Raise a Freeman” which was workshopped with the McCarter Theater, Playwright’s Horizons and Center Theater Group in Los Angeles.
A former resident of New Dramatists, her work has been developed at Playwright’s Horizons, CTG, The McCarter Theater, O’Neill Musical Conference, The MacDowell Colony, The Lark, Second Stage, Oregon Shakespeare Theater, The Philadelphia Theater Company and the Children’s Theater of Minneapolis.
As a writer and producer, Alexander’s television credits include “Russian Doll,” “La Brea,” “Hunters,” “24: Legacy,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and the upcoming series “The Accused.”
A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, Alexander is co-founder of The Kilroys, a collective of playwrights, directors and producers in Los Angeles and New York who are done talking about gender parity and are taking action.
