Michelle Lewis
Michelle Lewis is creator and executive producer of “Kindergarten: The Musical,” an animated musical series that follows 5-year-old Berti and her new friends as they navigate the experiences that come with starting school for the first time.
A two-time Emmy® Award-winning songwriter and composer, Lewis began her career as a Giant Records solo recording artist and, for the last two decades, has written charting singles for a diverse array of artists — from Amy Grant (“I Will Be Your Friend”) and Cher (“Different Kind of Love Song”) to Little Mix (“Wings”) and Andra Dae (“All Rise”).
In 2012, she and her writing partners, Dan Petty and Kay Hanley, branched out into songwriting for animated series, starting with writing all of the original music, including the theme song, for the Peabody Award-winning Disney Jr. series “Doc McStuffins.”
Her additional songwriting television credits include “Vampirina,” “Bubble Guppies,” “The Loud House” and “Julie and the Phantoms.” In 2021, she and her writing partners teamed up again with “Doc McStuffins” creator Chris Nee on the Emmy Award-winning musical anthology series “We the People.”
A highly influential music creators’ rights advocate, Lewis is a cofounder and the chief executive officer of Songwriters of North America (SONA) and the SONA Foundation, a trade association and charitable organization for songwriters and composers. Born in New York City, Lewis appeared regularly as a child singer on “Sesame Street” and later attended Columbia University. She currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband, Dan Petty, and their son, Jackson.
