‘World News Tonight’ Expands Margins Over NBC in Both Adult Demos Posting Largest Adults 25-54 Lead in 4 Months and Biggest Advantage in Adults 18-49 in 1 ½ Years
‘World News Tonight’ Turns in Second Largest Audience Across All Key Demos in a Year, Behind Only the Previous Week’s Coverage With David Muir Reporting From the Wildfires in Los Angeles
With Largest Lead Over NBC in 30 Years, ‘World News Tonight’ Ranks #1 in Total Viewers for the 9th Year in a Row, Growing Lead by 37%, and Is #1 in Both Adult Demos for 6th Year Straight, Growing Its Margins by Triple Digits Over NBC Season to Date
“World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the No. 1 program of the week in Total Viewers (8.074 million) on all of broadcast and cable (excluding sports) for the second week in a row and fourth week this season during the week of Jan. 13, 2025, based on Live+Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.
- “World News Tonight” stood as the evening’s No. 1 newscast in all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (8.074 million), Adults 25-54 (1.217 million) and Adults 18-49 (845,000), outperforming “NBC Nightly News” (6.820 million, 983,000 and 648,000, respectively) by 1.254 million Total Viewers, by 234,000 Adults 25-54 and by 197,000 Adults 18-49.
- “World News Tonight” grew its margins week to week over “NBC Nightly News” in Adults 25-54 (+24% – 234,000 vs. 189,000) and Adults 18-49 (+14% – 197,000 vs. 173,000). “World News Tonight” delivered its largest Adults 25-54 lead in over 4 months and biggest advantage in Adults 18-49 in 1 ½ years — since weeks of 8/26/24 and 6/26/23, respectively.
- “World News Tonight” increased its gaps over “NBC Nightly News” in the same week last year: Adults 25-54 (+23% – 234,000 vs. 190,000) and Adults 18-49 (+37% – 197,000 vs. 144,000).
- “World News Tonight” turned in its second-best numbers in all key target demos in 1 year — since weeks of 2/5/24, 1/15/24 and 1/15/24, respectively — behind only the previous week’s coverage of the Los Angeles wildfires.
- For the week, “World News Tonight” (8.074 million, 1.217 million and 845,000, respectively) defeated “CBS Evening News” (5.037 million, 721,000 and 461,000, respectively) by 3.037 million Total Viewers, by 495,000 Adults 25-54 and by 384,000 Adults 18-49.
- Season to date, “World News Tonight” (7.759 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 9th consecutive year, based on Most Current Data. “World News Tonight” is leading “NBC Nightly News” (6.211 million) by 1.548 million and “CBS Evening News” (4.645 million) by 3.111 million. In fact, “World News Tonight” is growing its Total Viewer lead over NBC compared to the same point last season (+37% – 1.548 million vs. 1.129 million) to its largest in 30 years — since the 1994-1995 season.
- “World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 6th straight season. “World News Tonight” (1.112 million and 768,000, respectively) is leading NBC (917,000 and 613,000, respectively), increasing its margins from the same point last season by triple digits in Adults 25-54 (+255% – 195,000 vs. 55,000) and Adults 18-49 (+210% – 155,000 vs. 50,000). In addition, “World News Tonight” is leading “CBS Evening News” (679,000 and 455,000, respectively) by 433,000 Adults 25-54 and by 313,000 Adults 18-49.
NOTE: On Monday (1/13/25) and Friday (1/17/25), “World News Tonight” was retitled to “WNT-ABC.” On Friday, “CBS Evening News” was retitled to “CBS Evening Nws.” The retitled telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. ABC’s weekly averages are based on three days (Tuesday-Thursday), while CBS’s weekly averages are based on four days (Monday-Thursday).
