With David Muir Anchoring From Hurricane Milton’s Path, ‘World News Tonight’ Delivers Largest Viewership in 9 Weeks and 11-Week Highs in Key Adults Demos and Is #1 Newscast Across All Broadcast and Cable
‘World News Tonight’ Grows Lead Over NBC Week to Week in All Key Demos and Year to Year in Total Viewers and Adults 25-54, Outdelivering NBC by 1.5 Million Viewers and CBS by Nearly 3 Million
With Largest Lead Over NBC in 29 Years ‘World News Tonight’ Ranks #1 in Total Viewers for the 9th Year in a Row and Is #1 in Both Demos for 6th Year Straight Season to Date
“World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the No. 1 evening newscast in all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.453 million), Adults 25-54 (1.087 million) and Adults 18-49 (749,000) during the week of Oct. 7, 2024, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. Muir anchored special editions of “World News Tonight” on Wednesday (10/9/2024) and Thursday (10/10/2024), reporting from Hurricane Milton’s storm zone in Florida.
- “World News Tonight” outdelivered “NBC Nightly News” (5.936 million, 935,000 and 607,000, respectively) by 1.517 million Total Viewers, by 152,000 Adults 25-54 and by 142,000 Adults 18-49, respectively.
- “World News Tonight” increased its advantage over “NBC Nightly News” from the previous week in Total Viewers (+9% – 1.517 million vs. 1.387 million), Adults 25-54 (+20% – 152,000 vs. 127,000) and Adults 18-49 (+19% – 142,000 vs. 119,000).
- “World News Tonight” widened its year-to-year lead over “NBC Nightly News” in Total Viewers (+84% – 1.517 million vs. 824,000) and Adults 25-54 (+15100% – 151,000 vs. 1,000).
- “World News Tonight” improved on the previous week across the board: Total Viewers (+5%/+385,000 – 7.453 million vs. 7.068 million), Adults 25-54 (+16%/+147,000 – 1.087 million vs. 940,000) and Adults 18-49 (+17%/+107,000 – 749,000 vs. 642,000). “World News Tonight” drew its largest overall audience in 9 weeks and posted 11-week highs in both key Adults demos — since weeks of 8/5/24 and 7/22/24, respectively.
- On Thursday (10/10/24), “World News Tonight” scored its largest single-day margin over “NBC Nightly News” in Total Viewers (+2.072 million – 7.736 million vs. 5.664 million) in 14 months — since 8/15/23.
- Season to date, “World News Tonight” (7.480 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 9th consecutive year, based on Most Current Data. “World News Tonight” is leading “NBC Nightly News” (5.926 million) by 1.554 million and “CBS Evening News” (4.526 million) by 2.954 million. In fact, “World News Tonight” is growing its Total Viewer lead over NBC compared to the same point last season (+49% – 1.554 million vs. 1.046 million) to its largest in 29 years — since the 1994-1995 season.
- “World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 6th straight season. “World News Tonight” (1.069 million and 739,000, respectively) is leading NBC (905,000 and 589,000, respectively), increasing its margins from the same point last season by triple digits in Adults 25-54 (+193% – 164,000 vs. 56,000) and Adults 18-49 (+188% – 150,000 vs. 52,000). In addition, “World News Tonight” is leading “CBS Evening News” (643,000 and 442,000, respectively) by 426,000 Adults 25-54 and by 297,000 Adults 18-49.
- For the week, “World News Tonight” (7.453 million, 1.087 million and 749,000, respectively) defeated “CBS Evening News” (4.485 million, 630,000 and 439,000, respectively) by 2.968 million Total Viewers, by 457,000 Adults 25-54 and by 310,000 Adults 18-49.
