The #1 Program on All of U.S. Television Is ‘World News Tonight With David Muir’, and the Newscast Is #1 Across the Board — in Total Viewers, Adults 25–54 and Adults 18–49 — Outdelivering NBC by 1.8 Million Viewers and CBS by 3.1 Million Viewers

‘World News Tonight’ Beats NBC in Adults 25-54 by Its Largest Lead in 8 Weeks and Grows Lead Year Over Year in All Key Demos by Double Digits

Season to Date, ‘World News Tonight’ Ranks #1 in Total Viewers for the 8th Year in a Row and #1 in Both Demos for 5th Year Straight

World News Tonight with David Muir stood as the No. 1 program of the week in Total Viewers (7.344 million) on all of broadcast and cable (excluding sports) during the week of Aug. 26, 2024, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” has been the No. 1 most-watched program on television for 23 weeks this season (with and without sports).

  • “World News Tonight” ranked as the No. 1 newscast on all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.366 million), Adults 25-54 (999,000) and Adults 18-49 (629,000). “World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (5.602 million, 752,000 and 496,000, respectively) by 1.764 million Total Viewers, by 247,000 Adults 25-54 and by 133,000 Adults 18-49, respectively.
  • “World News Tonight” widened its margin over “NBC Nightly News” versus the previous week in Adults 25-54 (+47% – 247,000 vs. 168,000) to an 8-week high — since w/o 7/1/24.
  • “World News Tonight” increased its year-to-year lead over “NBC Nightly News” by double digits in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+21% – 1.764 million vs. 1.462 million), Adults 25-54 (+57% – 247,000 vs. 157,000) and Adults 18-49 (+82% – 133,000 vs. 73,000).
  • “World News Tonight” improved on the previous week in Total Viewers (+5%/+326,000 – 7.366 million vs. 7.040 million) and Adults 25-54 (+5%/+48,000 – 999,000 vs. 951,000).
  • “World News Tonight” has won the last 298 of 301 weeks in Total Viewers and 226 of the last 231 in Adults 25-54.
  • Season to date, “World News Tonight” (7.747 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 8th straight year based on Most Current Data. “World News Tonight” is leading “NBC Nightly News” (6.467 million) by 1.280 million and “CBS Evening News” (4.662 million) by 3.085 million.
  • “World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 5th consecutive season. “World News Tonight” is leading NBC in Adults 25-54 (+118,000 – 1.078 million vs. 960,000) and in Adults 18-49 (+83,000 – 735,000 vs. 652,000). In addition, “World News Tonight” is leading “CBS Evening News” (666,000 and 451,000, respectively) by 412,000 Adults 25-54 and by 284,000 Adults 18-49.
  • For the week, “World News Tonight” (7.366 million, 999,000 and 629,000, respectively) defeated “CBS Evening News” (4.287 million, 632,000 and 431,000, respectively) by 3.079 million Total Viewers, by 367,000 Adults 25-54 and by 198,000 Adults 18-49.

NOTE: On Friday (8/30/24), “World News Tonight” was retitled to “WNT-ABC,” “CBS Evening News” was retitled to “CBS Evening Nws,” and “NBC Nightly News” was retitled to “NBC Nitely News” due to the Labor Day weekend. The retitled telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. ABC’s, CBS’ and NBC’s weekly averages are based on four days (Monday-Thursday).
