‘World News Tonight’ Stands as the Only Evening Newscast To Post Year-to-Year Gains in All Key Demos — Increasing Its Margins Across the Board Over NBC From the Previous Week

‘World News Tonight’ Ranks #1 in Total Viewers for the 9th Consecutive Year, Growing Lead by 31% Over NBC to Its Largest in 30 Years, and Is #1 in Both Adult Demos for the 6th Year Straight, Nearly Doubling Its Margins Over NBC Season to Date 

‘World News Tonight’ Is the Only Evening Newscast To Grow in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 Season to Date

“World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the No. 1 evening newscast in all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.565 million), Adults 25-54 (1.035 million) and Adults 18-49 (696,000) during the week of March 17, 2025, based on Live+Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. 

  • “World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (6.103 million, 860,000 and 545,000, respectively) by462 million Total Viewers, by 175,000 Adults 25-54 and by 151,000 Adults 18-49.
  • “World News Tonight” increased its margins over “NBC Nightly News” versus the previous week in Total Viewers (+6% – 1.462 million vs. 1.378 million), Adults 25-54 (+38% – 175,000 vs. 127,000) and Adults 18-49(+22% – 151,000 vs. 124,000).
  • “World News Tonight” widened its advantage on the same week last year over “NBC Nightly News” in Total Viewers (+5% – 1.462 million vs. 1.363 million) and Adults 18-49 (+13% – 151,000 vs. 134,000).
  • “World News Tonight” improved on the previous week in Total Viewers (+1%/+73,000 – 7.565 million vs. 7.532 million) and Adults 25-54 (+1%/+12,000 – 1.035 million vs. 1.023 million).
  • “World News Tonight” posted year-to-year gains in Total Viewers (+33,000 – 7.565 million vs. 7.532 million), Adults 25-54 (+3%/+35,000 – 1.035 million vs. 1.000 million) and Adults 18-49 (+6%/+39,000 – 696,000 vs. 657,000), standing as the only evening newscast to grow from the year-ago week across the board. In addition, “World News Tonight” delivered its 8th straight week of Total Viewer growth.
  • For the week, “World News Tonight” (7.565 million, 1.035 million and 696,000, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (4.056 million, 609,000 and 421,000, respectively) by 3.509 million Total Viewers, by 426,000 Adults 25-54 and by 275,000 Adults 18-49.
  • Season to date, “World News Tonight” (7.925 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 9th consecutive year, based on Most Current Data. “World News Tonight” is leading “NBC Nightly News” (6.347 million) by 1.578 million and “CBS Evening News” (4.591 million) by 3.334 million. In fact, “World News Tonight” is growing its Total Viewer lead over NBC compared to the same point last season (+31% – 1.578 million vs. 1.203 million) to its largest in 30 years — since the 1994-1995 season.
  • “World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 6th straight season. The ABC newscast is the only evening newscast to improve over the same point last season in Adults 25-54 (1.126 million vs. 1.121 million) and Adults 18-49 (+1% – 780,000 vs. 770,000). In addition, “World News Tonight” (1.126 million and 780,000, respectively) is leading NBC (942,000 and 628,000, respectively), nearly doubling its margins from the same point last season in Adults 25-54 (+98% – 184,000 vs. 93,000) and Adults 18-49 (+97% – 152,000 vs. 77,000). In addition, “World News Tonight” is leading “CBS Evening News” (669,000 and 448,000, respectively) by 457,000 Adults 25-54 and by 332,000 Adults 18-49.

NOTE: On Thursday (3/20/25) and Friday (3/21/25), “CBS Evening News” was retitled to “CBS Evening Nws.” On Friday, “World News Tonight” was retitled to “WNT-ABC.”  The retitled telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. ABC’s weekly averages are based on four days (Monday-Thursday), while CBS’ weekly averages are based on three days (Monday-Wednesday).
