For 17th Week This Season, ‘World News Tonight With David Muir’ Is #1 Program on U.S. Television, and the Newscast Is #1 in Total Viewers, Adults 25–54, Adults 18–49

“World News Tonight with David Muir” finished as the No. 1 program of the week in Total Viewers (7.249 million) for the 2nd week in a row on all of broadcast and cable during the week of May 27, 2024, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” has been the No. 1 most-watched program on television for 17 weeks this season (with and without sports).

 

“World News Tonight” ranked as the No. 1 newscast on all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.249 million), Adults 25-54 (1.027 million) and Adults 18-49 (669,000). “World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (5.605 million, 799,000 and 507,000, respectively) by 1.644 million Total Viewers, by 228,000 Adults 25-54 and by 162,000 Adults 18-49, respectively.

 

“World News Tonight” increased its margins over “NBC Nightly News” week to week in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+9% – 1.644 million vs. 1.503 million), Adults 25-54 (+21% – 228,000 vs. 189,000) and Adults 18-49 (+28% – 162,000 vs. 127,000). “World News Tonight” posted its largest Total Viewer lead over the NBC program in 9 months — since w/o 8/14/23. Additionally, on Thursday (5/30/24), the day of former President Trump’s verdict, “World News Tonight” beat “NBC Nightly News” by nearly 2 million Total Viewers (+1.938 million – 7.557 million vs. 5.619 million).

 

“World News Tonight” widened its gap over “NBC Nightly News” year to year in Total Viewers by 10% (1.644 million vs. 1.499 million).

 

“World News Tonight” improved on the previous week in Total Viewers (+23,000 – 7.249 million vs. 7.226 million), Adults 25-54 (+3%/+31,000 – 1.027 million vs. 996,000) and Adults 18-49 (+2,000 – 669,000 vs. 667,000), turning in its strongest numbers in overall viewers and in the key Adult news demo in 5 weeks — since w/o 4/22/24.

 

“World News Tonight” has won the last 287 of 288 weeks in Total Viewers, including the last 131 weeks and 215 of the last 218 in Adults 25-54.

 

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (7.863 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 8th straight year based on Most Current Data. “World News Tonight” is leading “NBC Nightly News” (6.582 million) by 1.281 million and “CBS Evening News” (4.764 million) by 3.099 million.

 

“World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 5th consecutive season. “World News Tonight” is leading NBC in Adults 25-54 (+127,000 – 1.100 million vs. 973,000) and in Adults 18-49 (+99,000 – 749,000 vs. 650,000). In addition, “World News Tonight” is leading “CBS Evening News” (688,000 and 467,000, respectively) by 412,000 Adults 25-54 and by 282,000 Adults 18-49.

 

For the week, “World News Tonight” (7.249 million, 1.027 million and 669,000, respectively) defeated “CBS Evening News” (4.246 million, 642,000 and 451,000, respectively) by 3.003 million Total Viewers, by 385,000 Adults 25-54 and by 218,000 Adults 18-49.

 

NOTE: On Monday (5/27/24), “World News Tonight,” “CBS Evening News” and “NBC Nightly News” were coded as specials due to Memorial Day. The telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. ABC’s, CBS’ and NBC’s weekly averages are based on four days (Tuesday-Friday).
