ABC Audio Announces Steven Portnoy As National Correspondent
Vice President of ABC Audio Liz Alesse sent the following note to the news division announcing Steven Portnoy as national correspondent for ABC News Radio:
Dear colleagues,
I am thrilled to announce that Steven Portnoy is returning to ABC News as national correspondent for ABC News Radio. He will join the ranks of our powerhouse political team based in Washington, D.C.
Steven has earned his reputation as an insightful, straightforward journalist with over two decades of reporting on politics and breaking news. His work has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Bayliss Horizon Award and multiple Edward R. Murrow, National Headliner and New York Festivals Awards. He also served as president of the White House Correspondents’ Association from 2021 to 2022.
This chapter in Steven’s career marks a homecoming. He first joined ABC News in 2002 as an intern for the White House unit of “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings.” In 2006, he was named Washington correspondent for ABC News Radio, providing in-depth coverage of the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections and the 2011 death of Osama bin Laden.
Steven previously served as a White House correspondent for CBS News Radio, covering the Trump and Biden administrations, as well as the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections and the Jan. 6 insurrection. He also extensively reported on the prisoner swap that led to the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner from Russia and hosted a CBS News Radio network special on the 1948 murder of legendary correspondent George Polk.
To quote Steven’s 2022 White House Correspondents’ Dinner speech, “We journalists are inheritors of a public trust. We’re the guardians of the people’s right to know what their government is doing in their name with their money. We are the questioners … so that government officials may be made to explain their views and defend their actions for posterity and for the whole free world to see.”
As we embark on another pivotal presidential election season, ABC News Radio is committed to upholding those high ideals, and Steven’s integrity and tenacity as a journalist will help us achieve that mission.
Please join me in welcoming Steven back to ABC News.
